Minutes of the West End Neighborhood Association (WENA) Meeting

Wednesday, 14 November 2018

Reiche Community Room

Board members present: Barb DeSerres, Leana Good-Simpson, Rosanne Graef, Ian Jacob, Steve Mortimer, Liz Parsons, Pamela Shaw, Bryan Van Dussen,

Board members absent: Gwynne Williams

The meeting was called to order at 6:33 pm.

Secretary’s report

Minutes from the October, 2018 meeting were accepted as read.  

Annual report

Liz Parsons noted that WENA’s annual report had been circulated with the meeting notice and  is also available on the WENA website.

Treasurer’s report

The Treasurer reported a total of $2,230.82 in the checking account. The general account contained $562.18, including an additional $140.00 dues in cash and checks, $47.41 in dues through PayPal, and a $20.00 cash donation.   The WECANAIP account added $25.00 from the October movie for a total of $200.32. There was $30 in petty cash, $1,176.71 in the Swim for Life account, and $144.20 in the Harbor View Project account.

Community policing

Dave Argitis and Sarah Colton were present, and said that there was little crime to note for the previous month, other than vehicle burglaries. They advised everyone to be careful to keep their car doors locked. Liz shared copies of the Criminal Trespass Authorization Form. Dave explained the intent of the form which is allowing the police to respond to people on private property who are not supposed to be there.

Community Announcements:

  • Bryan Van Dussen announced the formation of a West End co-ed volleyball team and invited people to join..
  • Pat Shutts reminded everyone that the Book Club is now meeting on the first Monday of the month in the Reiche Community room.
  • Liz Parsons read an announcement from the Children’s Nursery School about the Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, December 8, at State St. Church.
  • Rosanne Graef referred members to her article in November’s West End News describing all the Monday night activities in the Reiche Community Room, which she hopes will soon include occasional Laughter Yoga, and a night of Speed Debating.

Special Recognition

Liz Parsons asked that the minutes reflect thanks from the WENA community to Rosanne Graef, who is stepping down from the WENA board, for her many valuable years of service as President of WENA and member of the board.

WENA Board Election

Liz announced four candidates for the board. Two are current members whose terms are up and would like to stand again:  Liz Parsons and Leana Good-Simpson. Two are volunteering to be new members of the board: Christian Bisimwa and Kim Sutton. All four introduced themselves.  

The ballots were distributed, members of WENA present at the meeting voted, and all four candidates were voted onto the board.

The new WENA board for the next year is now

The new WENA Board then appointed the following officers for the coming year.

The meeting adjourned at 7:00 and everyone then enjoyed a potluck dinner.
